What's with that kid in a plastic bubble at Japan's baseball games?

Japan has started having baseball  games with no fans in the  seats - instead they have cardboard people wearing mask - I think that sends a good message so I get it. But what I don't get  is the 9 year old kid in a plastic bubble - instead of throwing the ball to home plate he walks it over in his plastic bubble. I only saw a brief news clip so I don't know what happens when he reaches home plate - he is wearing a helmet so I am assuming that the batter tries hit the bubble into the stands. Cheers and happy Mothers day!

He IS the baseball.  They wanted to make sure the ball would be hit, as the virus might pass from pitcher to catcher if the hitter missed the ball.  Not many home-runs are anticipated this season.
