Why would you blame the adoring worshippers of da big cheese? They live to please him without any volition. They are robotic automatons GROOMED to do his bidding without exception.
In The Mancburian Candidate the "victim" was groomed to murder. By his own mother. If he had succeeded why would you blame him? He would be just a robotic automaton groomed to do the bidding of the person who controlled his mind/took over/ordered.
Same with anything. BLAME the one who is in control and calls all the shots. Don't blame the ones who due to extreme fear or extreme madness automatically follow orders. They don't know any better. They are helpless.
