What started the craze for inserting a "h" into the word "were" and making it into the unrelated word "where"?

What is the idea behind that?

A bunch of drunken people trying to dephifer what was written many years ago.
Who knows what they were actually saying.  We just follow what other therorize and take is as fact.

I would like to say in defense of beautiful penmanship, I enjoy looking at and reading wonderful handwriting.
I am so tired of type-written words, it has driven me to not want to communicate.
Handwriting is an art.  One that I hope is not lost but seems to be since we are turning into robots anyway.  HUMPH!

I used to have a nice handwriting, but after all these years of typing, it has suffered.  It's still legible, but not as nice at it once was.

You are excused from the class. Please go have a cup of tea or a whiskey.  Whatever you desire.  You have passed with flying colors.

I'm sure you have proven and done duty with learning proper writing (a great way of communicating,) posture, a great way of presenting yourself, diligent duty, and above and beyond, respect for yourself and others.
The gig that's going on now makes us boring with now expression.  Look at John Hancock.  This man had self pride.
Now look at doctors who sign their names.
Hand writing is as important as what you wear to a job interview.
My handwriting, I have been told is beautiful but hard to read.  What does that say about me? I say it says I need to communicate more clearly.  There is no sense in having one without the other.
With all of just learning how to push buttons to form letters to communicate.  WELL, that takes away rationalization and truly taking the time to communicate.
I wonder how many people actually sat down and wrote thank you notes, if given at all.
I wonder how many people made a card or did anything by themselves without the internet and just pushing a button.
It is rather disturbing to me.
The only good news is I am able to have friends such as you.
If this is the only way we were able to befriend each other, it is worth it.
BUT lets not forget, your handwriting still reflects how you feel about yourself and the world around you whom you are communication with. This post was edited by Merlin at May 15, 2020 5:43 PM MDT

I agree, but then, we may have grown up in a different era (I know I certainly did).  Some of the things we learned to do and how to comport ourselves were important back then.  We have become too relaxed and, as a result, manners and social graces have suffered along with the language.  I understand that there are schools that no longer teach cursive writing - just printing.  There are some things that are OK to relax about and some that aren't.  How many times have you heard people say that spelling and grammar aren't important as long as the person on the other end understands what you mean?  I remember any time I interviewed for a job, there was a spelling and grammar test.  Probably not anymore with spellcheck, but auto-correct can get you in a world of trouble. :)

What started the craze for asking questions about what started some unknown craze to establish the proper spelling of a random word?

If people were a bit less random in the way they spelled words, other people would be less likely to ask questions like this.

Random? I don't think I have ever seen were or where misspelled.

You were the one who said it was random, I just repeated what you said. I see those two words misspelled everywhere on the Internet these days and I just wondered why, that's all.

Words are spelled. Flour, as some used in making matzo, is spelt.

But you were the one who raised this non-issue by posting the question in the first place.

That is how the sounds spoken to make the word are spelled.

Different spelling, different meaning. Why are homophones treated as if they are interchangeable when they are obviously not?
