Have you noticed that people are quick to blame others for tragedies such as 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic?

It's similar to blaming the victim for a sexual assault - if she hadn't been dressed like that or hadn't walked down that dark street, etc. Do people do it to insulate themselves from the reality that complete safety is not achievable and life is fragile?

The blame for 9/11 falls squarely on the persons who perpetrated the acts - the terrorists.  As far as COVID-19, unless this virus was cooked up in a lab somewhere with the intent to cause a pandemic, there is no one to blame.  There are any number of viruses out there that could kill people.

Where blame does lie is in how the reaction to those types of events are handled.  Rushing to invade Iraq when virtually all of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis, was irresponsible on GWB's part.  As for handling the COVID-19 crisis, Trump's calling it a hoax by Democrats to thwart his re-election and all the other paranoid comments he made and minimizing the severity of it, his dismissing the Obama administrations plan for such an event, his disbanding medical and scientific groups who deal with such viruses, has not helped to contain the virus.  His claim that we had all the supplies we needed was false - even to this day.

We have rape shield laws to protect victims from having their past behaviors and/or reputation from affecting their assault claim in a rape case.  I believe all states have some form of it.

Too bad there aren't shield laws to protect those with a past, who have changed and gotten their life straightened out. The mark follows them until the day they die and beyond the grave.

There are limits on what can be brought into evidence as to character witnesses in court.  But, you are right, just like our mothers told us, our lives would be a trip decided by the decisions we make.  Strong people realize that looking to the future is the only way to really put the past behind you.

How often do we see those who make a big show of assigning blame instead of being able to offer solutions.
It is especially problematic when done in lieu of leadership, or by those from whom leadership is expected.

About a year ago, I posted a similar question as to why proponents of a politician will be so quick to assign praise for any and every positive thing that happens during that administration’s reign, and the opponents of a politician will be so quick to assign blame for any and every negative thing that happens during that administration’s reign, when in reality, many, many factors are involved in why things happen. Additionally, some positive things or negative things may have been in the works already prior to that particular administration having taken over, yet the actual results just by happenstance are occurring during the reign, and would have or might have occurred anyway. The rush to lionize or demonize is so strong in some people that they allow their agenda-prompted mindsets rule their every move.

You have posted a very good question here; I hope it garners some equally great answers.
