The government needs to be funded (yes, RWNJs, no matter how much you want to drown TEH BAD EBIL GUBMINT in the bathtub, we still need it). If Donald Trump is not paying a reasonable amount of tax to pay for the government services he is using (e.g. police to prevent the contractors he didn't pay from demanding payment at gunpoint), then someone else has to pay those taxes and that results in a net cross-subsidy to The Donald.
Of course, part of the Authoritarian fantasies of Trump's followers is to one day be so rich that they, too, can afford the lawyers, tax accountants, and political donations which will enable them to also tell the IRS to go Cheney itself (mixed in with the belief that only N*gg*ers, Sp*cs, and F***ING HADJIS are "takers" because....REASONS!). Hence, The Donald will lose few supporters no matter how egregious his tax avoidance has been.

Calling people who don't pay federal tax as takers did not work out well for mr Romney. As far as it goes for trump he followed the law and he did not make the law. Why is the law so bad? Maybe because politicians like hillary are slave to those who bribe them. What number would you have trump pay when the law says zero dollars? Before I worked for myself I would get a refund of the amount they had said I had overpaid sometimes.
I dunno.. Was the information about Romney available to Trump??? If so, he was tweeting, instead of reading.
Here's my take on it. IF I was gonna run for president, even IF I didn't owe any federal taxes, I'd PAY some anyway. And, when I showed that to the nation, I'd WIN, and WIN bigly.

My accountant has never asked me how much money I want to pay that I do not owe so my assumption is that there is no line asking for that number. Even if there is a way to donate to the federal tax collectors there could be no right answer and trump could choose to donate a million dollars but it would not change the people who would say a million dollars is no different than zero dollars to a rich man. He would be better to donate to clinton charity in exchange for being an ambassador.
As long as you follow the law and take legal deductions you are following the system as intended . I f you are lying and withholding information and cheating then it is wrong and illegal and should be punished. Instead of blaming the person complain to your Congressman and change the laws.

I have no trouble with Trump, Romney, etc. taking all legal tax AVOIDANCE measures.
I have a problem with Trump, Romney, and their supporters...
A) Claiming it makes them "smart" (i.e. morally superior) for simply doing what they are legally allowed to do in their self-interest
B) Not recognizing that the tax avoidance schemes which allow the Wealthy and Powerful to pay comparatively low tax rates are a form of cross-subsididy.
C) Yammering about the poor/urban/ethnic and their alleged failings for being so dirt poor as to not have any INCOME tax liability and utilizing social transfer benefits to obtain minimal levels of food/shelter/medical care/etc.
If you want to brag yourself (or defend those who brag) about minimizing tax liability, than STFU YOU F***ING HYPOCRITES about those who maximize their receiving social benefits under the law.
You make some good points but it still goes back to the laws that allow low life's to take advantage of them. Our system pays people on welfare more money for each kid they have where is the incentive to have less?
I agree that it's more a fault of the law than of people who take advantage of the law. But unfortunately that's how things work in this country: the rich are always favored by the laws since they are the biggest influence on them.
