Are you liking answerMug's new format?

Do you think it's an improvement over the original site?

this is the second time I am answering this
    The first time it crashed
could't make the connection it said.
So yeah once the bugs are worked out haha
    it should be cool.

  • Yep.  There are a lit of wrinkles left to be ironed out.  Maybe it won't take too long.

  • I am having some degree of difficulty navigating, accessing the questions and providing a response.  It is quite different from the original and, I fear, will cause me to lose interest due to such a drastic change.  I do not care for this new format.  Like many older men I get used to, comfortable with, a style and am extremely reluctant to change.  In this instance I beg for a return to "Classic AM" and let's put this unwanted makeover in the trash.

  • I doubt that will happen. I am feeling the same way. AB is reopening on Oct 20. One of the old members bought it. I am just waiting to see how that site will be. It's not Demand Media, nor the ones who originally owned it.

  • Maybe once they get everything fixed... But right now it's pretty frustrating and I'm not enjoying it.  It seem like everyday something different stops working,  but i know they are working on things.

I really like it. Granted, I hadn't been here long enough to be attached to the previous site. I usually don't care for complete layout changes on sites where I've been a longtime user. It can go either way. But in this situation, I think it's an overall improvement. From what I understand the change was implemented earlier than they'd have preferred, but all things considered, it's been a pretty great transition. For me, at least. I haven't had any problems aside from just acquainting myself with the navigation changes.

It looks great, I've found it easier to use, I love the additional features and although I kinda miss the old homepage layout, I haven't found the features of our new homepages lacking in any significant way. It's just more personal, but it has all the same functions. So all in all, I think it's great!

  • Like I said,  once everything is up and running properly it will be a lot better.  I was a longtime member and it's really hard to see such a drastic change.  I'm sure I'll get used to it though.

I can definitely sympathize with that! I don't know if I'd have the same opinion if I'd been here for years per se. I've been a yahoo! user since the late 90's, when they revamped their homepage and completely eliminated the original mail layout, I was furious! So I can see longtime members not necessarily loving the revamp. I've bounced between new sites so often recently, that it wasn't that drastic a change for me.

But on the whole, I think the additions add to functionality rather than take away from it. That is quite different from most of the site overhauls I participated in in the past. And one thing I've loved most about this site is the old-school feel it has. I don't think it lost that, which I like :)

I am not liking that I can't read the front page on my iPhone, so I have to go back and forth to my iPad. I don't care for the chat box. The old one was easier and more fun.

There re are things I do like about it though. I like the answerbox a lot. You have all those options. Great! The points and gifts are great. I don't know that much on where the gifts are.

I don't like that I have to keep signing in constantly.

Is it the size of the page that's a problem? If so, use the "screen-lock" button in the black bar at the top. It locks all the columns in place and enables zoom.

  • It's the opposite for me.  Lock screen does not enable zoom.  I can zoom in only when the screen is not locked.

That doesn't make any sense. The site is responsive, so it fills whatever space it has- zoom wouldn't work unless you have a browser and you've used a feature like "desktop" on it. What kind of phone are you using and what browser do you have?

  • I have a ZTE Android and use Google Chrome. The first time I used my phone on the new site it already had the screen lock in place.  When I  unlocked the screen I could zoom in.  I just tried locking it again, Just to see and the zoom didn't work.

Bozette is spot on. It has to do with your browser settings. She was our lead Android beta tester and ran it through every browser on multiple settings repeatedly. She knows the Mug on Android better than anybody.

Thank you for the guidance, Bozette!!!

    HI JA, it's ME again.

Same problem.   I have no way to download pictures without getting a sorry message.

    and a number.

So, I'm wondering if that thing Bozette is talking about applies to me?    I tried your alternative of saving the picture to the desktop (?) and it didn't work at all.

So, if you have any other suggestions?  I'm willing to try anything.

    Thanks in advance....Sharon

Every browser reads the code of the site a little differently. We tested it on just about every type of device and every browser to look for kinks in the way the browsers themselves read the code. Some people put addons or extensions on their browsers and others have unique settings. These are things we cannot possibly account for. We can only make the site work in the base versions of common browsers on common devices- Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, etc.

In their case, Karen is using an Android phone, which, no matter what browser, will read our site's code differently than your PC browser will. Because Bozette is an Android user, and she's the one who tested the site for us, she's really familiar with how all the browsers work and it sounds like Karen has a setting on her phone that's causing her issue, as Bozette cannot duplicate it, even using the same operating system and same browser.

I think you use a desktop PC, so you can't be having the same issue Karen is. I put together a video for you. If this does not help, please email me with what browser and operating system you have (windows, mac, etc.). From there, I can try to duplicate your problem and either ask the tech team to fix it or help you adjust your settings so it works.

  • I don't have as many issues with my phone. It's just that the zoom only works when it screen is unlocked. It's my PC that I keep getting logged out of when I click on a question to answer it.

Sorry, that wasn't clear based on your response. The fix for the logout issues should have come through yesterday, but computer cache/ memory may prevent your browser from seeing it yet. You can clear your cache so it has to learn the site over again or live with it until it decides to read our codes again and look for updates. I did forward the issue to the dev again, but it seems to be a cache issue, so we'll probably give people a couple days to clear their caches manually or refresh on their own before we start poking around on that issue again. As far as I know, nobody who is reporting it has tried clearing their cache. In Chrome, you do this by going to settings, advanced settings, privacy, clear browsing data, and then make sure only the box for cache is checked.

  • Thank you, but I do know how to clear everything out. I clear cookies, history and cache every night. I defrag about once every two months and run a maleware scan about every two weeks.
