"Russian hackers target Covid 19 Research Centers." Why? Do they want people to die including themselves?

It depends on what they are doing.
Hackers generally do two things:  steal information, and/or destroy information.
I'm guessing they were (at least) stealing information, to give to Russian labs.
Though from what I understand, the scientists are already sharing information around the globe.
So maybe it's just the Russians being paranoid that they aren't being told everything.

Wonder if Trump will turn a blind eye to it. Cheers!

Of course. He has no choice Nanoose. Whatever the putin has over him is devastating and huge and worth losing American lives. Although to be fair the trump places no value whatsoever on anyone's life save his own. He is indifferent and in fact BORED when the numer of rising cases and number of rising deaths is brought up. He couldn't care less. He is consistent. Incapable of processing any information he is dumb today as the day he was born. It happens! Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday to thee and thine! STAY SAFE! :)

This was examined on our News programme this evening.

They don't want people to die. The most likely explanation is that they want to steal a march on everyone else by producing the first effective vaccine, even if it means stealing information from others.

I suppose the Russian government would hardly care that scientists and doctors are working internationally on this already.

Success would show Russia, and especially a Russia led by President Putin, in a good light, especially to Russians.

Oh. I think I must conflate hacking with destroying. Hacking just means you got in to look around right? Though once in what would prevent you from changing data, eliminating/erasing/rearranging? Sigh. If it's not one thing it's another! Thank you for your reply Durdle! Have you ever "hacked" into something? What is the difference between "hacking" and simply accessing a site? :) This post was edited by RosieG at July 17, 2020 1:19 AM MDT

"Hacking" is the unauthorised, covert and usually criminal access, whether to damage the site or data, as you suggest, or to steal information.

"Simply accessing a site" implies the normal , legal reading of it.

No - I have never "hacked" anything! I do not have the wish or mind to do anything like that - and besides, even if I did, I do not have the knowledge and skill necessary!

So hacking is when you access a site to which you have no right the purpose of which is to damage it or steal information. I expect hackers make a very good living. Rather like industrial espionage?  Thank you for your reply Durdle! :)

There are also legal hackers ... who are hired by a company to attempt to gain "unauthorized" entry, to reduce the risk of an illegal hacker doing so.

I've see movies about them Walt. Also movies about folks testing security systems by seeing if they can break in. That makes sense. Thank you for your reply Walt! :)

In fact I think some reformed burglars do go onto to advise on property-security!

Who would be better at it? I think that's a fine way to redeem oneself as long as there is no backsliding! Thank you for your reply Durdle! :)
