“Probably”?  Well, not so fast there, Globetrotting Pilgrim. There’s not always a need to go to a consulate just because one travels abroad, and wouldn’t you remember whether or not you’ve been to consulates?

Unlike my well-spoken, Globetrotting Pilgrim,  friend Baba,
I have not been to 18 countries; however, I have been to many.
    The answer is Yes.
At one point we went because we wanted to exchange more money and found we had lost one of our IDs or papers for visiting.
My memory is fuzzy because it was a long time ago and I didn't speak the language.  Luckily, my traveling companion did!!
Whatever it was, the problem was solved very quickly.

Yes.  If memory serves, we had to get help when in Luxembourg.  We bought a car when we arrived at the airport in lieu of our planned rental.  A couple from Texas approached us and we bought the car they were about to simply abandon.  Americans do this, or they did in the 70s when we first were there.   The problem I believe had to do with insurance for the car.  We went to the government building downtown and seems like there were Americans there to help us....their office was in the same building.   We got it straightened out and went along our merry way to Germany where we promptly ran out of gas on the Autobahn, which at the time was illegal.  We walked to a police station at the next exit and felt like we were not treated nicely.....but weren't sure since we didn't know German.    Thank God for the hitchhiker we had with us who spoke both German and English.  These adventures went on for a couple of months and made great memories.
