I think history shows that some assassinations (worldwide, not just US, and no just countries’ leaders) have backfired on the perpetrators‘ intended results due to the aftermaths, so much so that even the most rabid or irrational person/group/entity hesitates to carry them out in certain cases.
Turning one’s opponent into a martyr, or even worse, garnering sympathy and empathy for the opponent’s movement is indicative of an assassination plan gone wrong.
