What was the plight of Anglo-Japanese* people who lived in Japan during the onset of World War II? Did they suffer abuses or humiliation?

 *Such as American-Japanese, Australian-Japanese, British-Japanese, etc.

Are there historical references telling how they were treated by the Japanese people or the Japanese government?

In the Japanese mind, maybe they were being treated appropriately?
I can't answer for what went on in the past.  I wasn't there nor was I one of those people who did this.
I can speculate, it wasn't fair.
    I DO sympathize.
    I AM sorry.
