How prevalent and popular are GENDER REVEAL PARTIES? A shameless bid for gifts? Milking a natural thing like being pregnant?

My gawd these folks really are bored and have nothing better to do than THAT? Well the folks who caused the CALIFORNOA horrendous fires had one and sparks from it set everything off. They will be held responsible but how do they pay for the destruction the devastation the loss the evacuations? Unbelievable. Tragic.

My daughter did one and we thought it was silly. No gifts, though, but we got a free lunch.

I guess I am way old and way out of it E. She and her husband did not start a fire though right? Did your daughter do the cooking? Who is the better cook? Your wife or your baby girl all growed up.

I think they’re idiotic.  Just another way for the (soon to be) patents to get “me time”.

This is the second time a “gender revel” stunt has caused a major fire in California.   Stupid people doing stupid things making many others suffer.

They should make the partiers pay for the damages caused by the fire.

California law says that they will.

You're here! I was kinda worried. Did you have to evacuate at all Shuhak? How often are you without power? Anyway I agree with thee. You take something natural normal and well beautiful and SACRED (to me anyway) and stage a production number out of it! Cheapen it. I did not know about the first fire one caused. What do they do set bonfires and roast marshmallow? Another example of blinders and blunders and very bad consequences. Thank you for your reply m'dear and Happy Friday to thee and thine! :)

Power here was turned off at 10:10 pm monday and restored around 2:30 pm Wednesday.
No evacuations here.  The North Complex fire is roughly 40 miles from here, but the smoke from it is horrendous!  Blocks out the sun.

No, they use pyrotechnics to launch blue or pink "glitter" into the air.   This post was edited by Shuhak at September 12, 2020 2:02 AM MDT

How did you survive it? That long without any power at all? Were you able to sleep? Did everything in your fridge spoil? Geez how awful. We've seen photos of the red sky blanketing the areas. It's all over the news from coast to coast. Some of the MSNBC news anchors are Californians by birth and they of course have family there. The fallout affecting the lungs is going to be horrendous. Breathing in that stuff. It is a nightmare from which we don't seem to be able to awaken. Condolences. But you are still here so that is good. It's probably too late to matter but would wearing a gas mask help? Or breathing from an oxygen tank as some people with damaged lungs do? Thank you for your reply shuhak. No electricity no internet. When you are silent I worry. SIGH. :(

Power was off for 5 days once last year.  PG&E claims that this year they will strive to make outages as short as possible (eye roll).
I put a few things from my fridge over at my sisters (she has a generator).  The rest I have to hope will still be ok (bread, vegetables, etc.).  Actually, despite the stress it was much easier to sleep because the the neighbors massive "light collection wasn't working.

The AQI here last night was well over 500.  It's still hovering around 400.  I had to use my N-95 mask to go outside this morning. The smoke is quite thick.

I'm sure it helps to be wired as you are Shuhak. You're living in an environment right out of he** and yet you are calm and very matter-of-fact about it. I know getting furious or hysterical helps nothing but still it is MADDENING. How much of this could have been mitigated if years ago people took global warming SERIOUSLY? Remember how Al Gore was EXCORIATED about talking about it? How many decades ago was that? And here we are as predicted. SIGh. Stoic works when the only other choice is exploding. Thank you for your reply! :) I'm going to ask.

I think it takes some of the magic out of it. When my better half was expecting, we didn't want to know. Unfortunately our daughter was an exhibitionist, the ultrasound was unmistakable. Our son had his back to the sensor, the nurse offered to try to shift the pickup to determine gender and we both responded with an emphatic "NO!".

Ditto here too. And your choice of words is perfect. "....it takes some of the magic out of it". But even if you want to know isn't that something that is a celebration in itself? Why does it need to be expanded and have spotlights on it an be applauded or whatever? Even if there were no adverse consequences it would put a bad taste in my mouth figuratively. More exhibitionists wanting attention. Poor baby. How else will they exploit the child once it's born? Thank you for your reply R! :) Shuhak said this is the second fire a gender reveal caused. I had NEVER HEARD OF IT...gender reveal? Gadzooks. :(

It is all in good fun.  Some do them as a separate party and some do it as part of the baby shower.  If not part of the shower, not gifts are expected.

Many times the shower is hosted by family/friends so that person is in charge. With a gender reveal Mom and Dad can be in charge.
