The English language is so cruel!

I'm a black dude, so if someone is said to have fair skin and I do not, does that mean I have unfair skin?

Old School, 1000 years ago now, it seems, you told me when we did not know each other, that you were a Libra.   You said it like, "yeah that is supposedly my sign, but I don't believe in any of that stuff".   (no kidding)

But... at that precise moment in time, I KNEW I would be able to talk to you because I KNEW where you were coming from.  I know what makes them tic.

Libra is the JUDGE and you have to be fair.   Or it will ulcerate you.

You and Randy do have that in common.  You like to be impersonal in your assessments. You both like to weigh all of  the evidence impersonally.    Randy?  He doesn't care if you don't like him, if that comma doesn't belong there, he's gonna let you know about it.

Same with you.   I happen to think there is more to life than fking commas, but someone has to do it.  I find the things that you argue about to usually have a tad more merit, but Randy knows his stuff too.  And he is a hell of a writer.  (digressing) This post was edited by WM BARR . =ABSOLUTE TRASH at October 13, 2016 6:47 AM MDT

  • light – dark

    light – heavy

    right – left

    right – wrong

    correct – incorrect

    fair – dark

    fair – unfair

    just – unjust

Even though a word’s opposite meaning is determined by the context, I have often wondered whether our language has evolved in a way that reflects racial prejudices. If this is so, does it unconsciously perpetuate them? If we had no prejudices, would these usages become obsolete?

The colors red and yellow don’t carry the same connotations, but golden often refers to something mystical and appealing.

Does yang versus yin refect the deep dislike of the feminine in Chinese culture? The yin partner in any pair of opposites far more often has a negative tone. But in the Tao Te Ching each pairing is a neutral necessity within a whole which is greater that the sum of its parts. Does this mean that the Tao seeks to reconcile something ill at ease within the language and culture of China?

Do we need to create a better philosophy for language and healing in English?
