I love the guy in business attire fitting into the beach crowd. :)

The time that stands out for me is the FIRST time I received an invitation to a formal gala in honor of one of my husband's relatives in the small town where he was well known and loved.  I can't remember if it was birthday or what.  But the invitation said formal, so, of course I RSVPd and made sure my husband's tux was ready to wear and we embarked on what was to be a pleasant evening.  We had about an hour drive.   We were going to spend the night with Uncle X and his family on the family ranch.  It was a huge house and could have been a showplace, but alas it wasn't.  We got into town just in time to go right on to the affair.  Well, we walked in and I didn't see another tux or long dress......people looked like they were dressed for Church.  Well, luckily men can dress down quickly by removing jacket, vest, etc.  Not so easy for me in my long dress.

Seriously, I should have thought more about it when the invitation said the party was at the community center.........   We lived in a large city and sometimes there is just a bit of disconnect.  Anyway, it was a fun night.  Uncle was well-known for always having pliers in his back pocket.  And sure enough, before the night was over, someone needed those pliers.

Ok, you got me; I can only put together that your long dress and the pliers each had something to do with each other, I just don’t know how, lol! I wish you wouldn’t be so vague, Woman! Tell the rest of the sto . . .

When I first started working at my current establishment, I hadn't been there long when there happened to be a full staff training day/planning day.. I assumed, (wrongly!) that this was an opportunity to dress up, nicely, or in attire different to our formal, but rather staid clothing. I thought it was a chance to show more of our character and colour... So.. I wore a rather fetching red, pink and blue floral mini-dress!

To say I felt foolish was an understatement! Apparently it's was understood that the day was one where people could 'dress down' and wear jeans.. I felt uncomfortable not least because the dress was way too short.. and I had to keep tugging it down to protect my modesty.. all round a seriously bad move to wear that dress on that occasion.

How did I rectify it? Well, there was nothing I could do really.. just pretend that this attire was perfectly normal for me and that it 'was' dressing down for me!

I wore a jacket and tie to a job interview at a radio repair shop. Remedied? I wore jeans and a t-shirt to work. Yes, I was hired.

  • During a visit to the USA, I went to church with Livvie and her mother.  I went because Livvie's mother invited us.  I wore one of my best dresses and a pair of my best shoes.  Livvie and her husband were also overdressed for that church.  Livvie and her husband wore their normal clothes, but they were both still overdressed.  Everybody else wore T shirts, tank tops, shorts and sandals.  I didn't understand Livvie's mother's church.  Livvie's mother thought my dress was inappropriate.  Dressing down to go to church is backwards to me.

Many people at my synagogue dress down as well, partly because of the time we live in, but also because the culture of the congregation emphasizes spirituality over appearance and vanity. Nothing backward be about it IMO.

I think the way you do. I’m not originally from California, but I’ve lived here for about 30 years, and I’ve never gotten over how t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops are appropriate for any occasion or venue. They wear them at church, on jury duty, formal events, on airplanes, at casinos, etc. Heck, before California, I was stationed in Hawaii for five years, and even there it wasn’t as bad as this place.
