In retrospect, what is a financially-related opportunity you passed on yet turned out to be positive that you didn’t do it?

More than twenty years ago, a couple approached us with an offer for us to get in on the ground floor of an investment company that practically promised financial independence within five to ten years if truly dedicated (translated to “dump all your money with us, we’ll do the rest) to the prospectus. This couple was already planning to leave their jobs, invest their savings in this thing and become full-time evangelists for the company. It seemed like a Ponzi scheme to us, so we declined.

A few years later, the company was featured on a news program as part of a nationwide scandal that had wiped out the savings of hundreds of people. The owners (not the couple who had known us) had skipped the country and Interpol warrants were out for their arrests.
  We certainly dodged that bullet!

Very smart.  Ponzi scheme opportunities seem to pop up in some of the most unlikely places.
