    When I first encountered the "'i' before 'e' except after 'c'" rule, my understanding was that it applied to words in which the sound "ee" as in "please" occurred, and held true with the exception of "seize". "Counterfeit" breaks the rule but otherwise it is sound.

    If it's a rule, it's a rule - should apply to all words, but I guess rules are made to be broken. :)
