It began approximately 1960 with the advent of the anti-hero as the main protagonist in many mainstream movies, with which then shifted that characterizationism to television shows about a decade later. Gone were the days of upholding or attempting to uphold or pretending to uphold the value-driven, moral, good, sane, law-abiding, positive role models, in lieu of the mean, nasty, foul, cruel, dirty, morally-bankrupt scum.
In other words, that ship has sailed.
