I was born in a borough of New York City but I live in a different borough now, but still a New Yorker born and bred.

Why would you think that.  If it wasn't for my ancestors desire to come to America, I wouldn't be here.

I departed the humble abode of my family there at the age of eighteen years old, I shook the dust off my feet and I joined the Marine Corps, and my shadow has not darkened those environs since then.

(I’m exaggerating. I went back to visit a few times, but I doubt I could count their number on both hands. Wait, make that one hand.)

Yes, but I'm looking to move, as it has no resemblance to the place I grew up in, it use to be a small Medieval town, now it's looking more like the worst parts of London.

I'm sad for you - for all of us. There was a time conservation and preservation had some power behind it, but now its just lip service supported by a few cranks and dreamers who don't yet realize big business and 'development' have far deeper pockets and much bigger bulldozers and wrecking-machines than the rest of us, and probably have the necessary government connections too.

Into my heart an air that kills
    From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?

That is the land of lost content,
    I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
    And cannot come again.
