    What he means is if the results are not clear or there is sufficient evidence of fraud to challenge a result in a state(s). Just as Al Gore did in 2000.

    If you recall  Gore won the popular vote. It went to the Supreme Court and the Supremes chose the president. Gore deicded for the good of the country not to prolong the fight. That was AFTER THE FACT OF THE ELECTION when the results were in, not before the fact. I think the two situations are not analogous at all at this time. Will they be? I don't know yet.     Trump believes it maybe a close race in some states and was not going to say he was not willing to say he would not contest or ask for a recount...just as Gore did.
