12 miles to the southwest. Our landfill boasts of having the most scenic views in the entire county. On a clear day, one can see much of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, from just south of Mount Shasta to just north of Yosemite, and all the forested hills between. It's utterly breathtaking... in more ways than one.
OK, technically it's now a "transfer station" (the landfill part was shut down back in the 90's due to well water contamination). Trash is no longer allowed to be buried in this county (again, wells), so it's trucked down to somewhere above Colusa
They might be doing that now, but I think the Staten Island landfill is still there. What other state could take that much garbage? Oh, I know - Texas.
