Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» On a remote peninsula in northwest Russia is the world's deepest hole. Drilled down 40,000 feet. Now it's capped. Didja know?
The Kola Borehole. I saw a piece about it on an episode of "Mysteries of the Abandoned" a few years ago. They were, as usual, trying to outdo the US (anything you can do we can do better).
Did what you saw give you an inclination/indication of what, if anything, they found as they were boring down? I mean the thing is interesting of course but what do we do with it? Thank you for your reply Shuhak! :)
It was an attempt to reach the Mohorovicic Discontinuity, the theoretical boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle. Didn't work, when you get down far enough it's too hot - the drill bits go soft and distort.
They thought their materials were sufficiently advanced to avoid that. They weren't. One of those things where the Politburo said "do it" so they tried. Lysenkoism, aversion to science isn't new and Trumpicans didn't invent it. It's been going on since King Canute and it seems that no-one has learned a thing since then.
Did you hear that when the Russian President said he wanted to send a spacecraft to the sun, his scientists said it was not possible, as the sun is too hot? He replied "Then let's go at night."
