When was the last time you used or even saw a fridge that was NOT self defrosting?

I renovated my kitchen about 15 years ago.  Before that, I had a fridge that needed to be defrosted.  I hated that job.

There was an elderly gentleman I was helping take care of a few years ago who still had a non self-defrosting unit (he had no money).  Gloves, hammer and icepick.  We finally bought him as new one, but he passed away a few months later.

I think the very first apartment I lived in had one that had to be defrosted and I didn't know what that even was! 

My mother-in-law still has a GM Frigidaire from the 1960s. They built things to last back then.

I have one.  The one in the kitchen is self-defrosting but the small one upstairs isn't.  It is a smallish two-door unit but not frost-free.
