I can make it look like I call you from ABC Computer Service using both their name and number on CallerID. It just takes a little piece of equipment. Of course if you call that number back you will actually call ABC Computer at their number. You'll never know what number my call actually came from......and it very likely originated outside of the USA. If you are getting the calls on a cell phone then you only received the CID number, not the name. I imagine sometimes certain numbers are spoofed for a reason and other times it's just arbitrary. Since so much of it originates outside of the USA, the USA has no jurisdiction to even try to stop it. It's called number spoofing and is rampant among crooks and scammers.

I never heard of such a thing. I am not sure what it even means. Besides a scam that is.

It hasn't happened to you...yet. But you know it is a scam so no prob. I think it is humorous when I get one from a guy with a heavy Indian accent who is calling from CO and his name is James. He didn't know the Capital of CO.
I believe that is mostly used for scams. I have had three or four calls come in while I was online (so looking at my phone when the call came through) that briefly showed as originating in Canada then switched over to a number in my area code. The person with that phone number had no idea his number was been used.
