Ever hear of FAS....Foreign Accent Syndrome? A rare medical condition that can be triggered by neurological/psychological damage. Example?

An Asian Australian woman woke up after surgery with an IRISH accent. Had her tonsils removed April 19. Nine days later she woke up with an IRISH accent. Says her singing voice has improved and she can hit notes now she couldn't before.

Will her Aussie accent ever come back as she wants? Perhaps it will. Or it won't.

So what accent would you like to wake up having?

That just totally and completely boggles my mind. There seems to be no explanation for it other than some kind of neurological/psychological something. Truth be told I wouldn't mind having a British accent or sound like an Aussie. I kind like it. I mean what the heck is "American"? New York, Atlanta, Chicago, L.A.? What's distinguished about any of them? No disrespect intended. But seriously what accent would YOU like to have m2c? Thank you for your reply and Happy Sunday to thee and thine. There are people who HEAR color. They SEE music. It's some kind of phasia. I don't remember exactly what the name of it is. But can you imagine that? :) This post was edited by RosieG at June 27, 2021 7:29 AM MDT

There is no American accent.  America has many accents within the country. NY has its own, Chicago, southern, Louisiana,  CA all have an accent. We hear them a lot so sometimes we do not hear them.

I am happy with my accent it is a blend of IL and southern.  I do not hear it. But I have recieved compliments for it.  This post was edited by my2cents at June 27, 2021 7:47 AM MDT

PRECISELY MY POINT! There is nothing distinged or distinguishable about being an American in terms of accent. It is all over the place from rotten to high tone and in-between. When a BRIT speaks you know it. Listen to an AUSSIE and tell me you can't figure out the nationality? French. Spanish. Canadian. All have a certain je ne se quoi. Individuality! American? A slap dash hash. Nothing therein is gourmet. Sheesh. SIGH. So you have received compliments on your ACCENT? Congrats. That's a new one on me. Again, you do not hear it because you are used to it.
I just listed USA placed where the accent is very distinguishable from other areas of the country.

I was posted to the HMCS Bonaventure while it was doing a refit in Lauzon Quebec and was practicing my French quite a bit. I was in a tavern chatting with a guy one time and unexpectedly I began speaking (English) with a French accent and I could not stop it. My friend said 'i didn't know you were French'. Me: 'I AM NOT french'! But I could not stop myself speaking with that french accent.
Till the next day when I became sober.
