If you engage to the death then I guess the fun is for the one who stays alive. Otherwise what's the point? It's not an efficient way to kill someone is it?
Fencing isn't meant to really simulate warfare or to the death sword fighting. It's mostly based on civilian defensive and dueling sword fighting. I enjoy watching it. You kinda have to have some basis of the differences in foil,epee, and sabre disciplines. You have to understand the technique to really see what is going on. Foils are used to recreate the techniques of a formal sword duel with a rapier. An epee is used to recreate rapier techniques that be used in a self-defense situation. The foil is lighter and points are only scored by thrusting into the torso. In epee contact thrust scores on any part of the opponent and uses a heavier rapier based sword. You see more attacks with foils then epees. With the epee discipline you see more focus on evading and movement since you are open to more attacks. In sabre both the blade and the point are used and points are scored for both slashes and stabs. The sabre being more reminiscent of actual combat style swords. The foil and epee do not score and are not designed for slashing. The skill involved is impressive and quite a sight once you are able to recognize good technique and form. Though yeah, outside of that I can see where it would be kinda boring.
