    I think if that mob had not been stopped when it was, they would have killed someone whether they actually set out to do it or whether the person was stampeded to death.

    No, the vast majority of the protestors would not have taken any hostages. 

    There may have been a few crazies (rioters) may have taken hostages or worse.
