No more news in the Gabby Petito case, so the media has settled on the Alec Baldwin prop gun shooting as its latest obsession.

Its the familiar pattern: breathless wall-to-wall coverage ad nauseam, 24-7, as if nothing else important is happening and worth covering.

What's your prediction for how long this will last? Weeks? Months?

  • Yeah, the Gabby Petito case couldn't have had a less satisfying ending. So they had to find something involving celebrities and this is perfect.

The media is so boring. I don't watch or even listen to news anymore.

The Petito/Laundrie story isn't over yet. John Walsh is still going to air his special report on them.
I predict the prop gun shooting will go on for a month. All kinds off side-thread stories will pop up.

"The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department and Santa Fe County District Attorney said the gun that killed “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins contained a “live” bullet."

If someone puts anything into a gun and then fires a "blank" the thing inserted first can be shot out and kill just like a fully live bullet.  They were being specific because so much has been written about this is just two days.  I didn't know it and that would be no surprise to anyone.  That being the case they should use totally fake guns and add the sparks, smoke, and sound with computer.  They found 500 rounds of live ammo in that building.  I will not be surprised if it turns out one of the people who walked out loaded that gun. I heard a ridiculous claim by some talking heads on TV, last night.
They claimed that Baldwin wasn't responsible for the death and injury, because he was handed the gun and told it was safe.

    NOPE!

That may absolve him of murder, but he is still responsible for the death and injury.
It is no different than some kid getting a gun off the closet shelf and accidentally killing/injuring someone with it, because they "didn't know it was loaded".

It's called "involuntary manslaughter" in most jurisdictions.
If Baldwin wasn't following filming rules, then it could even be "negligent homicide".

Of course, if he had a dispute with the victim(s) and made any threat against them ... it could complicate the charges, depending on the mood of the DA.

I read the list of actions that the armor people perform prior to using a gun on set.  It was almost ridiculously long but the very last thing was that the actor is to, once again, check to be sure there is no ammo in the gun.

One might think that Hollywood, with it's vocal anti-gun crowd, would know and follow simple gun-handling rules.
    One would be wrong.

I haven't discounted the possibility of sabotage by one of the people who walked out.

Baldwin is obnoxious to me anytime he opens his mouth, other than when he is acting.  He is talented but through this whole thing I've pictured him like he was in The Juror.  That's not fair, but I have nothing to do with the case so I don't have to be.

This must have been covered more up there than down here.  The last thing I saw was that they could not at this time determine how Brian Laundrie died and were either importing people or sending the evidence off somewhere....don't remember.  But there probably will be little to say until they can answer that.  As far as the parents being in legal jeopardy, I don't know.  I don't know of any official yet mentioning that to the public.

Okay: Alec Baldwin shot and killed someone on set.

The gun was handed to him by a stage hand who failed to perform standard industry safety checks.

Said stage hand was a non-union employee hired by a cheap film producer unwilling to reach a suitable compromise with the union that bargained for their members to be adequately compensated for the experience and safety expertise that the industry depends on.

    That producer was Alec Baldwin.

My post was not about the facts, merits, or seriousness of the matter. I was commenting on the media's single-minded obsession with it.
