Thanks, Stu. This just inspired a full scale howling session at my house!

    :)

Dogs usually understand more, I think.

    Neither one.

Dog says - "Bark!  Bark!"  (translation - My good master, there is a cat thinking about entering the property 9.21 miles to the southeast.  Let me go out and stop this atrocious activity")
Hunan Says, "Shut the ---- up!  Its 3 in the morning!"
Dog hears - "What did you say"

Human says - "dodj snuggums wunts da bony-wony?  Dodj hez?  Dodj hez?  yez hez doz; yez hez doz"
Dog hears - cjghdfhgdo gjdofgjodifjghdfoi"  But since the tones are high it must mean, "wag tail happily".

I think dogs understand more than we realize.  They are also very good at non-verbal cues.  I remember years ago when I broke up with my boyfriend at the time, I was sitting on the couch and silently crying.  My pup jumped up on the couch next to me, sidled real close, and licked my tears.  Then, he came into my lap and just sat there in silent commiseration.

I can't remember where I read it, but researchers found that dogs have the intelligence of a 2-3 year-old human.
And it's pretty obvious that dogs can understand not only words, but non-verbal commands.

I wish those Japanese would get those dog-human translators working accurately.
