What are some of the drawbacks to being a little too subtle when dropping hints?

    Some people don't get subtlety, at all.
    My mother, for instance.  You can't be subtle when talking to her.
    In fact, what most people would consider bluntly rude, she considers being subtle.

    Being misunderstood or not understood at all.  I prefer to phrase things in a manner that leaves no doubt of my meaning without trying to deliberately be mean.
