Read the question again. It says "passport," not "large ego."

As a matter of fact, I do have a passport. I used it to travel to Wales UK twice and Melbourne, Australia back in 2013.

We had to have one in the Navy to disembark the ship overseas. I expired long ago.

Our military ID was our passport. Many places we tied up were US Naval Bases and our military ID was always good for re-entering the base to get back to our ship (in our civilian dress).

    You expired?

I'll re-phrase. Our military ID got us off and on the ship, but we had to carry our passports with us. Also, no uniforms and no military haircuts.

That quite possibly seems to be special units, special duties, and/or specific circumstances that warranted the appearance of not being associated with the US military or with the US government. I deployed far too many times to far too many places and with far too many other servicemen to have not noticed how this applied to regular situations. We had not no requirement nor need for passports.

Just like Kittigate stated, my experience was that the US Armed Services identification card sufficed for legal documentation for being on foreign soil while serving aboard ship overseas. I traveled to 14 different countries during my active duty days, not only did I never need a passport then, I’m not aware of any other active duty servicemember who needed one under those circumstances.
