    I know I'm going to be thrown major shade about this but, since you asked nicely, last October, I visited Russia for two weeks.

    Have you visited before at any time?  I would HIGHLY recommend it (late April to late October).  Would you happen to know your family's original Slavic surname?  That would make it much easier.

    I have not visited there. I studied the language many years ago. The only names in the written record dating back to the 1850's are Blumenthal aand Goldstein.

    Those are Saxon surnames... you may have to first do some research in Germany before continuing on to Russia.
