Football field/Gridiron. Basketball Court/The boards. Golf course/Links. Baseball field/Diamond.

What are some matchups for common terms for the physical places where certain sports are played AND nicknames or alternate names for those surfaces? Any language*, any location worldwide, any time period either past or present. Stadia (plural of stadium), arenas, centers, etc are excluded terms because in addition to being the surface where the sports are played, they can also mean the building, structure, or overall venue.

*For languages other than English, please include a translation of what your entries mean.

  • El baloncesto means basketball. Its nickname is hoops, which is directly from English. I've never heard it called aros. That would make no sense.
