Tipping isn't terribly common in Australia, hospitality staff are paid minimum wage at least. I do it for exceptional customer service, quiet thanks is all that ever happens.
An experience I observed; I once worked at a high end Mexican restaurant in another state. A co-worker of mine who was a real nice fella, gave excellent service all the time It was easy to spend a lot of money there and a couple came in and did just that. They left him 35 cents, when he saw that you could see his blood boil. He chased them down outside of the restaurant and gave them back the 35 cents and a few choice words, a little over-reactive I'd say.
