Up the road or down the road, how do we know which is which?

Whichever feels right at the time.  One might think that if the road heads north that is an 'up the road.'   But some us have no idea about direction.  I believe I use down the road if I'm on my way somewhere and (back) up the road if I'm returning.

It's a skill I have worked hard to perfect.

The road from Hay to Balranald is uphill in both directions, that's how flat it is. It also runs east-west, so north being "up" doesn't work either.
