For the first half of my life (40s to 80s), I only heard or read the past tense "pled". Sometime around the 80s, I began to hear the form "pleaded". It was jarring to my ear and still is. As far as I can find researching grammar sites, both are correct.
It falls into the same category as (and I scratch my head) replacing a two syllable word with a three syllable word, "converse" to "conversate". Spellcheck says "conversate" is not correct but that doesn't stop people from using it.
I have to remind myself that language is fluid, or we'd all be speaking Latin.
