Is it "lit" a cigarette, or "lighted" a cigarette?

    Thanks!
And now Jane(also NYAD) just answered your next tense question here, did she? This post was edited by DannyPetti at March 20, 2023 10:27 AM MDT

For the first half of my life (40s to 80s), I only heard or read the past tense "pled".
Sometime around the 80s, I began to hear the form "pleaded". It was jarring to my ear and still is.
As far as I can find researching grammar sites, both are correct.

It falls into the same category as (and I scratch my head) replacing a two syllable word with a three syllable word, "converse" to "conversate". Spellcheck says "conversate" is not correct but that doesn't stop people from using it.

I have to remind myself that language is fluid, or we'd all be speaking Latin.
