Is banning books good?

Hello:

Is there art, that if seen, will destroy looker?  If your eyes fall upon the penis of the statue of David, will you go blind?  What happens to you if you read or hear a nasty word?  Is there any knowledge too dangerous to possess?

Banning books is something that should never be done.  If a parent doesn't want their child to read something, then they should have to wait until they're old enough to understand it.  Books that are currently being banned are books that reveal the honest truth of some behavior in the U.S. that certain people want to keep from being known.  Not being able to read about it doesn't make it go away.  Perhaps if more people were exposed to more enlightenment about our history, we wouldn't keep making the same mistakes.

From schools, YES. Absolutely,  the images in the books that are putting in our schools would be deleted from this website.  Nudity is not allowed.
There were both students and parents who decided to read from from these books during school board meetings and were censored for reading obscene materials in the meeting.  If it is too obscene for them to read aloud in the school board meeting then it does not belong in a school library.

Porn does not belong in school libraries and that is exactly what these books are.

    Hello my:

The problem I have with making porn unavailable IN school, is that it's everywhere OUTSIDE of school.  If a kid wants to watch porn, he just needs to click his laptop, or watch it on the family TV when mom and dad are out.

Trying to keep porn out of school makes YOU feel good, but does NOTHING to protect a single child.  If you wanna actually PROTECT children, pass a background check for AR-15's.

BS. Keeping porn out of schools absolutely protects children.  Majority of parents also protect their children  from the filth.  I know I did and I know my grown children do with their kids.   Just because there are some stupid parents out there does not mean others have to neglect their job as parents.

There is a background check for every firearm purchase from a firearms dealer. (Not just AR15s)  We should also pass a law, where when someone fails a background check the police are sent to the person's home to inquire why they needed a firearm when they are not allowed to have one.

We should also make drugs and alcohol available in schools. After all, there's a couple of liquor stores on the same street as the school and several drug dealers also.

We could also save big bucks by no longer washing the floors or the restrooms. Porn in the library and filth in the bathroom. Little difference as far as i'm concerned.

    Hello N:

AGREED.  Read a book entitled, "Aint nobody's business if you do." It's a book about victimless crimes, like smoking pot or prostitution.

You'll have to look hard for it, cause guess what?  It's BANNED.

Amazon is willing to ship it to TN.  I cannot find anything claiming it is banned in TN or anywhere else.

For adults, absolutely not.  For schools it needs to be age-appropriate which is a little trickier because I’m to the left of this website’s TOS but I’m to the right of the school districts my2cents mentioned.  The naked statue in the park doesn’t bother me.  The illustration of a bare-breasted female statue on the cover of one of my kids’ books doesn’t bother me even though it would be deleted from this site.

For elementary schools, I agree with my2cents on this one.  If it can’t be read at the school board meeting or if a person would be prosecuted for having the discussion with a minor, then I would say no to having it in the elementary school library.

High school should be the time people are learning to become adults so those controversial adult topics need to be discussed while in high school so IMO, censorship isn’t really good in high school.

Middle school should be just that, in the middle.

These are just my opinions.  I’m probably to the left of just about every other parent where I live and at the same time I’m probably to the right of about everybody else on this site except my2cents. This post was edited by Livvie at May 25, 2023 6:48 PM MDT

Very well put. You have a perspective closer to real life on this subject. My children are adults and I have no grandchildren to keep me current on social issues pertaining to young people.

One thing about book banning is that it publicizes the books that are the subject of banning campaigns. Some authors are happy to be considered worthy of banning.

Any library or book store is censored based on the fact that the books made available therein have to be selected by the decision of someone. No library or book store can stock every book in print. This post was edited by NYAD at May 26, 2023 6:27 PM MDT

    Hello N:

You're exactly right..  If you wanted to create a black market, you'd ban something... Banning books will make both MAGA Republicans and black marketeers, happy.

Banning from schools and libraries is not the same as banning a book in general.
