The personal crisis of an artist often forces invention. This can lead to originality. By this I mean a major change, not just slight variations on a style or theme. But success is never guaranteed by innovation or quality alone. The originality can then trigger a public "crisis" in art: debate about what is acceptable and why. This is part of the politics and social dynamics which influence how works of art are received over time. Originality is one of the factors that creates shifts in the dominant paradigm of aesthetics and expression in culture. It is part of how culture evolves. The works of the earliest artists in each movement are good examples.
