Sacramento, not Los Angeles. Baton Rouge, not New Orleans nor Shreveport. Albany, not NYC.

Sometimes, people mistake a well-known city or a very large city for being the capital city of a state or country when in fact it is a lesser known or smaller or lower key city. It’s not usually people who live in or near those locations who make the mistake, nor is it always due to ignorance, often it is a lack of familiarity.

Question: similar to the examples I’ve listed in the title above, what are some other cities that are or could be mistaken for being capitals?

For various and sundry reasons, even though Minneapolis is not the capital city of your state, it holds a special place in my heart and soul as a capital city of a different kind.

    *weak*

Unless you mean one that has only been known for a week or, perhaps, I am simply ignorant as to the meaning of week-known.

A lack of familiarity is indeed ignorance.

I hear locals are just referring to it as Pago now.

Why? Because it’s not half the place it used to be!

This question also reminded me of a tee shirt my undergrad alma mater had printed to help with an ongoing issue.  I went to Samford University but every time I told/tell people that, they assume I am saying Stanford.  So, add to my list Sam not Stan.

There’s a small liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa called Cornell College, named for William Wesley Cornell, distant cousin of Cornell University founder Ezra Cornell.

I once saw a tee shirt in the college’s purple and white colors with Cornell College and its seal with the words “Isn’t that in Ithaca?”
