When an investigative reporter works for a media agency who owns the research, sources etc by the reporter?

    Assume it would be the media agency, unless there is a different prior agreement.

    That was my original thought as well but according to the journalists union, it is not the norm.

    If he's an employee paid by the media outlet the research should belong to the employer.  If he's an independent contributor, the research should belong to the reporter.

    That was my original thought as well but according to the journalists union, it is not the norm.  Journalists are normally given all of their research and notes etc upon leaving an employer. 
    They consider the employer keeping the information as a violation of 1st amendment press protections.

    Except CBS fired investigative reporter Catherine Herridge and kept all her notes, and even sources.  The union is trying to help her.
