I have never been pulled over by the police.  If there was a police car in my rearview mirror, it was going after someone else or just patrolling.

About 2 weeks ago.  We were waiting for a tow truck (our fuel pump went out) an officer pulled up behind us to check on us.

Every single time I‘ve driven to see my  sweetie, she’s had the foresight to arrange for an escort to meet me at the Minnesota state line. It doesn’t even matter which route I take, what time of day or night, the heaviness or lightness of traffic, or which vehicle I drive (my own, a borrowed one, a rental, etc), she always has them alert and ready to “welcome” me.

I just wish that at least once they would actually escort me to her instead of waving all kinds of legal paperwork at me and sending me back across the state line under the threat of arrest if I choose not to comply. What good is a police escort that doesn’t escort me to my intended destination? That’s why I choose to take an airplane ride instead. Grrrrrrrr.

Several years ago, my registration had expired and I hadn't got the renewal notice. Renewed rego on the spot with my Visa card and drove away.
The time before that was when my son was seventeen and I was teaching him to drive. Apparently some folks were putting L plates on their vehicles and driving intoxicated in the belief that they wouldn't be pulled over, so the police were checking everybody. Tim was sh*tting bricks thinking he'd done something wrong. After we both blew zero, the officer was very decent, letting him know that even though he'd bumped the curb when he pulled over, his driving was fine and not what attracted attention.

“L plates” must be an Australian thing, what does it mean, please?

Four inch square placards  featuring a letter L in black on a yellow background. These are legally required to be clearly displayed at the front and rear of a vehicle being operated by a learner driver in all states of Australia. It's a warning that the driver is inexperienced and prone to error, so the other road users allow more space. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at June 28, 2024 7:01 AM MDT
