    1st place, albeit possibly temporarily.

In order to be in first place, you would have to pass the person who is in first place - not the person in second place.

You just didn't think it out carefully enough.  You can't play the old lady card with me - I'm 78!

You passed the person who is in second place and that now puts you in second place. When and if you pass the person who is in first place, then you would now be in first place.

I had figured out the correct answer but my first thought was about my first 'official' race:

I was in sixth grade, an 80-yards dash.

At the starting gun, I was so far ahead of everyone else so quickly, that I was all by myself.
    I thought, "This isn't fun."

And I stopped, turned to look behind me, and I waited for everyone to catch up with me so we all could run across the finish line together.

Yeah, I wised up quickly. Ha!

The next six years in track were fun for me. I was a very good sprinter

Well, you'd now be second but I imagine if you asked that verbally and quickly, off-the-cuff, many would say "First"!
