Your initial premise is incorrect. Requiring ID is not racist.

Not my premise, it is the premise of several people who oppose voter ID.  VP Harris being one of those people.

She claims it is a way to "suppress and attack the voting rights of people of color."

Here is the ACLU fact sheet on it.

The cases aren't even remotely parallel. The rallies in question are invitation only. It's nothing like voting which is the absolute right of every citizen. It's to stop Trumpicans from crashing her party and is completely fair enough. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at August 13, 2024 5:59 AM MDT

Correct.....every CITIZEN.  And by requiring ID, it protects Citizens votes from being canceled by a noncitizen votes.

That wasn't the question. Harris requiring ID for entry to an invitation-only event is not even close to requiring ID to vote so the implied hypocrisy does not exist and you know it.

So I guess we can assume Harris did not invite any poor people who lack ID.

Because they are Americans.  I know they have no problem asking regular people for $20 multiple times a day.  I know because they text me average of 2-3 times daily.

There is a difference between requiring a photo ID to vote, and requiring it for other purposes. I posted the ACLU fact sheet below, so you can understand why they consider it as voter suppression and how it disproportionately affects Blacks. Voting is a right, not a privilege.

Requiring a photo ID to drive, take an airplane, or go to another country, for example, is not considered racist. I cannot say exactly why ID was required for the rally, but the reason given was security concerns. Since only people who had asked for and gotten an invitation were allowed in, and only after proving they were the person on the invitation, I can only speculate that they had vetted them beforehand or perhaps would need to know afterwards exactly who attended if anything occurred at the rally. Again, I am only guessing.

I think it may affect poor people in general more but not a racial thing.  It is a economic thing. There are poor people of every color/race/creed.

However, The states that require ID also will give anyone a gov ID for voting for FREE.  So to get the ID you have to have Birth Certificate (maybe $20), SS card (free) or W2, 1099, pay stubs (all free), and proof of address (bills are free as well)

To get welfare, IDs are required. Poor people manage to get them for that and they can manage to get them to vote.

The ACLU fact sheet addresses all of the points you make, including that up to 13% of Blacks of voting age do not have a photo ID compared to 5% of Whites.

The fact sheet addresses costs as well, but I'm sure these vary by individual, so your estimates certainly apply to many people. An additional requirement is a permanent address, which is seldom cost-free.

I don't know which, if any, states require a photo ID to get public assistance. My state does not.

There cost estimate was upwards from $75

I can tell you in my state a Birth Certificate is less than $20.00 and the other required docts can be acquired for free.  And if you want an ID for voting, it also can be recieved for free.

I can tell you they certainly do, ID,  proof of SS#, bank statements,  pay stubs, proof of address etc....basically all the same things required for a gov ID.  I know these are required in the 2 states I have lived in.

Thanks. I believe I answered the original question. I understand the problem you are trying to solve and I respect your views. My answer merely points out a couple of issues that need to be addressed if your proposed solution is going to be implemented. I don't expect it will change everybody's mind, but it may give some people food for thought. Voting rights are an essential right in a democracy and we need to be sure that right is protected equally for all citizens.
