Discussion»Questions»Food and Drink» As a first world nation, why can't we keep our food supply safe? Beef, chicken, fish, soda, frozen waffles have all been recalled.
It's time to grow our own food. Wanted to start my own garden last year but I'm not able to do it, old age has caught up with me. Now is the time to go vegan with our own safe garden. Fish from the ocean, lakes or streams is not safe anymore, pollution is everywhere in every country to some degree.

I agree, but for a great many people, that's not a possibility. People who live in urban areas have little to no place to garden. Now that I have my own home with an area to grow some of my own food, my age is also a problem along with sciatica and two bad knees. I'm lucky to be able to pull a few weeds now and then.
Big companies don't want costly regulations in place, is the most likely explanation. Small companies have a lot more to lose if they lose their reputation by providing contaminated food.
A lot of recalls are due to allergens that are not listed on the label. I think that's why a lot of labels say things like "may contain nuts" even though nuts are not an ingredient. Could be some kind of cross-contamination issue.
The illnesses caused by contaminated food are more troubling. I have taken to following the rules I used when traveling abroad. No fresh produce unless it has a thick peel and I peel it myself. All other foods must be cooked to a safe internal temperature.
