Should the pet owner be liable for the pet causing injuries to another person?

Or Is every dog entitled to one bite before the owner is liable?

The one bite law has been done away in most states in favor of strict liability laws which simply means 'if your pets harm someone you are liable, period.'   That is the way it should be in my opinion.  The event can turn criminal if you have an aggressive breed or if the laws in your jurisdiction call for it.  It is a pet owner's responsibility to know the breed of their pet and whether it is aggressive or has aggressive tendencies.  These breeds are illegal to own in some jurisdictions.   All pet laws are state specific.

he article is Canadian and it is no surprise if they still hold fast to the one-bite rule.  We got it from England in our beginning and was common law through the states for many years.

These are my personal opinions, not legal advice. This post was edited by Thriftymaid at May 25, 2025 12:49 PM MDT

I agree. If your pet harms a person or property you should be liable.   As long as the person was not trespassing or mistreating the animal.

I can see not forcing an animal to be put down after first bite but not eliminating liability all together.

Believe it should be considered on a case by case basis.
