What have you observed someone do that made you realize they were a cheapskate?

A houseguest who dumped the contents of the host's candy dish into her purse so she would have snacks for the road.

Back when I was young and in a secretarial position I had a boss who was unbelievably cheap.  He told me that his homemaker wife has to stay in the basement (where it's cooler) until she needed to start dinner, at which time she could go up and turn on the air conditioning.  I witnessed him, at the end of an office luncheon at a very nice restaurant,  stay at the table talking to a coworker and me white gathering all of the rolls still in the baskets and those still untouched on individual bread plates in cloth napkins and stuff into his pockets and a paper bag which I don't know from where it came.   My coworker and I still stay in touch and talk about this guy.  Oh yeah.....he also claimed he and wife used same bath water; she got to go first.  What a guy!!

Oh wait....one more gem.  One day he took his wife out to lunch for Chinese food.  When he returned he put a styrofoam take-out container on my desk with the leftovers from both he and his wife.   I just could not say "thank you."  I sort of laughed and said "I just don't know what to say."  Always take the truthful path.

I'm thrifty but not cheap.  I don't drive by 20 gasoline stations hoping to save one more cent per gallon.  Ohhhhhhh another example of marital bliss.  This post was edited by Thriftymaid at June 14, 2025 12:09 AM MDT

Too funny! I hope he and his wife were on the same page.

It seems they were but no one knows what goes on in other folks' homes.....unless they are foolish enough to tell.

Perhaps they are just poor.  Some people might think I'm a cheapskate, but I just don't have it.

There is a difference between poverty and being a cheapskate. A cheapskate is stingy, despite having the means to pay for necessities and often takes advantage of others. Being frugal is also not the same as being a cheapskate.

This is about the paper plates I have drying on the clothesline in front of my house, isn’t it? Hey, those things can get expensive, and I’ve always understood the word “disposable” on the label to be a suggestion, or an option.

(We all can’t be independently wealthy like you! Besides, all my extra funds are tied up in Anti-Vegemite causes, tilde proliferation, and fortifying the sub-basement. Grrrrrr.)
