Are most people on here from America/Canada? Are there many from the UK or Europe?

Just curious about the make up of the site.. Most of the good people here seem to be from the States which is cool..I first got online in 1994 and back then the only people online were mostly American. SO i made a lot of truly lovely American friends, some of whom I am still in contact with and a few I have met in real life.

The good people?  Well, I have to say you must  not be one of them.  The good people!

  • I am very sorry I don't understand what you are getting at? I think perhaps you are misinterpreting the expression good people and taking it literally? Or else I am not understanding some subtle other meaning in the way you are using language? That happens.. we share a language but not always quite the same meaning.. this is how misunderstandings occur i think..
Most of the good people of the site means ALL the people.. good people of the planet earth.. from Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.. was an address to ALL the people of the earth.. the way i used it was in the same tone..

EDIT... I just realised the Douglas Adams quote is a misquote but it does illustrate hopefully what i mean.. it's a form of address.. it's a polite form of address where the assumption is made that all the people one is addressing are good people..

Looks as if most are American or Canadian, but AM is an American company so that's hardly surprising.

Among those whose profiles I've seen, are a fair number of Britons (including me) some Australians and New Zealanders, and a sprinkling from assorted other countries.

Oh, and a goodly number of users from nowhere! :-)

There are people from most everywhere. On a text-intensive forum like this it self select to people who understand English. So most are American, Britiah, Australean. People who at least call their language English even if it can be hard to recognize as such. Have you heard a Scotsman speak his 'English'? Or a Texan ;-))

A Scotsman's spoken English? Even some English areas' English can be nearly impenetrable to other English!

Dialect - some English dialects can be hard to follow even for other English people! My comment was a light-hearted response to JakobA's remark on incomprehensibility.

Someone from Dudley, I think he is, told me that it was not so long ago the dialects in his area were so strong and varied that natives of Dudley would have struggled to talk to those from of Walsall, say, or Birmingham, even those these towns are only a few miles apart!

  • Oh right, well i guess that can be the case.. Personally I love accents and the stronger the better. I kinda feel that if we lost dialect, (and there's a real danger of that) then we would be much poorer for it. I guess i am against homogenisation and making us all bland and the same

I am from the Arizona desert where Arizona, California, and Mexico all meet. They tell me it is the dentist capital of the world: Los Algodones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I give out the wikipedia link because the town's url is blocked by some forums. There are three big towns here: Yuma, AZ, Indio, CA, and Thermal, CA. In summer they take turns being the hottest city in the nation. Another famous town here is Slab City, which you can tour at youtube.com

Most of the forums I have attended were dominated by USA and Australia with an occasional member from some other country.
