Are any of you planning to pre-order the new Trump mobile phone?

The phone was originally touted to be made in the USA, but the website has removed that language.  Experts have said that such a phone could not be made in the USA for $499.00 (or possibly any amount) due to various components not being avilable and the cost of manufacturing.

Trump Mobile, a new wireless carrier, is offering 5G service with unlimited calls, texts, and data for $47.45 a month. Other benefits include telehealth services, international calls to over 100 countries, Drive America roadside assistance, and "complete device protection."  For an additional low fee, they will come to clean your home, do your laundry, give you a mani-pedi, wash your car, mow your lawn and do snow removal, where appropriate.

Is this a bargain or what?

Nope. I do not pay that much monthly and I do not plan to spend that much on my next phone either.

I think the made in the USA thing was just a way to try and beat tariffs - and give them a price advantage. I also think the T phones will be made with the lowest quality parts the Trumps could find - so they won’t last long. I’m also wondering if there could be some built in spyware. Cheers and happy weekend

There is a company in US that produces a phone that is almost 100% made in the US. It is kind of expensive and it doesn't have much memory or features but it does have real good security features. I think consumers might start wanting a secure phone so the company might do real well. Cheers and happy weekend!

They will have to have their own app store, browers etc because once you bring in anything Google, MS, Apple etc the spying is there.

Is it even possible to make such a thing fully, right down to materials level, in the USA?

I expect it is possible to design the instrument, make the case etc., and assemble the 'phone in the USA; but does America have all the raw materials and manufacturing plant for the electronics components, without having to import any?

The intrinsic security of any portable telephone is a matter of its installed software, and I doubt very much the manufacturers install any "spyware". Unless perhaps it is made in China!  I think this fear stems from the telephone, once switched on, giving the network the instrument's geographical location so it can work. The network and its operators do not know why it is there, nor if the owner is with it (though that is usually the case!), let alone why the owner happens to be there as well. Really, personal security and privacy hinge largely on how the instrument and Internet are used.

    ...

Oh, by the way, how does anyone short of Dr. Who and his fellow Time-Lords, "pre"-order (or "pre"-book) anything? The verbs "to order" and "to book" already mean to request a future delivery!  This post was edited by Durdle at June 28, 2025 10:33 AM MDT

I agree with you that we don't have all the necessary components needed to build cell phones here and certainly ot for $499.  That is why it is being said that this can't be done, certainly not by Septeber, as Trump is boasting.  Sometimes I wonder why some folks are so worried about the government spying on them when so many are willing to post the minutae of their entire lives on line.

The ones posting all the time are not worried. They have no idea what type of information there is being collected on them. And think it is just for advertising.
