What if PET were smarter than any of us thought he was? What if he played the role of abrasive jacka** just to get elected? Could it be?

  • I see your thinking but I honestly think it's just wishful thinking.. I truly think the man is a snake.. vile to the core and stupider than mud... a disgrace.. but i do think or did think several times during the election that either he was really that stupid or was just talking down to the very stupid who were not smart enough to see what he was sayign was nonsense... so i did wonder once or twice whether he was smarter than he appeared.. on reflection i think not but that still leaves a lot of people who were very very very stupid who voted for him believing all that unrealistic, nasty hype

Either way he was elected. So far over 2 million MORE folks voted for Hillary than PET. They are still counting the votes. Could get up to 2.5 million. He was not our choice but we are stuck with him.  Thank you for your reply Addb  and Happy Thanksgiving Thursday to you and yours! :)

I don't think he was "playing" anything. I think he IS an abrasive narcissistic donkey, but he figured (correctly) that enough voters were stupid enough to vote for him BECAUSE he's an abrasive donkey.

Of course, power is divided in our national government, so just being an abrasive donkey won't get Trump his way with Congress, the bureaucracy, etc., and he's smart enough to tone it down a bit.

It will be interesting to see how much the Trumpistas rebel if The Donald does not live up to his abrasive donkey rhetoric (My guess: not much. What are they gonna do, vote STOOPID EBIL LIBRUHL COMMIE DEMOCRAP?)

I'm fairly sure that Trumpanzees would die before admitting they were wrong about him. If their mindless, militant defense of him during the campaign is any indication. Trump was right when he said he could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any voters. Not even if he killed the person. Supporters would casually dismiss it, naming the deceased a liberal who didn't deserve to live anyway.

He has already reversed himself on several important-to-the-haters issues. More will come. What will they do? March on  Trump Tower, Maralago, the White House  armed and loaded for bear? Mahalo for your reply OS and Happy Thanksgiving Thursday to you in Paradise! :)(

He's been in the public eye since the 1980's, and he's pretty much always been as he is now (abrasive jacka$$). I don't think we can call that a "role", I think it's his personality!

    Hi Rosie:

Of course. You just figuring it out 2+ weeks after the fact? Nobody capable of being elected president is stupid, not even Dubya.

OTOH, as Adlai Stevenson purportedly said to a woman who told him, "Mr. Steveneson, you have the vote of every thinking American!"

"That's not enough, ma'am. To win, I need a majority."

True, but they were talking about voters and we're talking about candidates. Eisenhower and Stevenson were both brilliant. Even Nixon, as paranoid and crooked as he was, was highly intelligent. This post was edited by Stu Spelling Bee at November 24, 2016 8:08 AM MST

@StuB -- We need to define some terms. Here's how I see the situation in broad strokes:

Trump is a narcissist who realized that modern Presidential campaigns are essentially Reality TV shows like he's familiar with. On a narcissistic lark, he decides to run figuring, "What the heck. Billions of dollars of free publicity." He bases his campaign on dozens of tropes which, in addition to being racist/sexist/xenophobic, are NOT based in reality (crime is NOT rampant, protectionism will NOT bring back millions of high-wage blue collar jobs, etc.), and (a bit unexpectedly) he wins.

If Trump tries to implement the promises of his campaign, does that make him stupid (for policies which have no basis in reality) or evil (for policies which only serve his political ends)?

Not sure there's any point in speculating. It won't change anything.

@StuB -- This isn't speculation. This is defining terms.

Is implementing counterproductive or nonsensical policies (because advocating those policies provides social/political benefits) stupid or evil?

Trump is merely the latest in a long line of people to have engaged in this behavior. This post was edited by OldSchoolTheSKOSlives at November 26, 2016 5:52 AM MST
