Is Mott a good name for a hoople?

  • The Urban Dictionary gives 'Hoople' as any useless, worthless, incompetent and self serving organisation or quango.

There are various definitions for 'Mott'.  It's archaic slang in the UK for 'woman' (a corruption of the French 'mort' for 'death', which is somewhat revealing), slang in parts of Ireland for 'girlfriend' and more recent UK slang for what Stephen Fry coyly once called a 'Lady Garden'.

The US slang is much nicer, it being a small copse of trees.

The book with the title, 'Mott the Hoople', by Willard Manus has 'Hoople' as what a hippie might term a 'square' (1960s parlance).

So it's 'women', 'girlfriend', 'vagina', 'thicket' the useless quango square.

I have to say, no it's not.  :)

I forgot about "Mott" meaning a lady garden. One friend of mine (who I haven't seen since he moved to another town about 10 years ago) used to call it that. Lol:)

I know about the Willard Manus book although I've never read it myself, it was the source of the name of one of my favourite bands.

Yes, I know. He was to thank for the band's commercial breakthrough. I've liked the band since I was 11, when I first bought "All The Young Dudes" on a single.
