What do you think about Trump appointing anti-public education activist, Betsy DeVos, as Secretary of Education?

That is certainly a shot in the heart of public education schools, colleges, and universities. DeVos champions charter schools. This program takes state taxes and gives then to kids who will go to private schools instead of public schools. In Michigan, where Betsy is from, poor kids who went to charter schools did worse than in public schools. Why? The richer kids went to the best private schools, and the poor kids went to the worse private schools. People assume all private schools are excellent. They're not.

Besides, there are not enough charter schools to take in all the students that go to public schools. Rural America doesn't have private schools!

Furthermore, Betsey has no experience in teaching or working with any schools or school boards. Philanthropy doesn't qualify anyone to head any education program, much less THE Department of Education for the whole country. Maybe she's there because she is a billionaire. Diverting tax dollars into private and parochial schools perverts the bedrock American value of separation of church and state.

This is perfectly in keeping with the long-standing GOP policy to convince voters, 'DABGUB GUBMINT CAN'T DO NUTTIN RIGHT NOHOW!"...and then appointing people to ensure that's exactly what happens.

  • Not all charter schools are technically private.  Some are privately owned and some are not.

There's a debate to be had with them but in my area I can't really complain about them.   They've been mostly a positive thing in my hometown that has long had terrible public city schools.  Yet I realize it's been a mixed bag in other areas.

I guess i don't have much of an opinion on the choice one way or the other as of yet. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 28, 2016 11:45 AM MST

I think it's not surprising at all. Seems that he's determined to appoint a cabinet as unqualified as he is.

This is simply another proof that Trump is completely clueless when it comes to governing the country - and there's 4,000 appointees to be made !! DeVos is an ideologue who has never seen the inside of a classroom as a teacher, and who believes the poor financial condition of her Michigan state is due to high wages and regulation.

  • Not being American I'm not too knowledgeable about how your system works ... But why are you surprised that trump would put someone there who is going to be amenable to trump rather than good at their job?

  • I think you have hit upon his recruitment strategy.  That could get very messy.

  • I think you are right ... There's an old saying about having people inside the tent pissing out, rather than outside pissing in
